KLH3004 Medisinsk statistikk (Medical statistics)

Autumn 2009

Eksamen 16 desember 2009 (norsk)

Exam 16 december 2009 (English)

Exam 16 December 2009 solutions

Re-scheduled exam (gjentatt eksamen): 10 June 2010.

KLMED8004 is aimed at PhD students within medicine and health sciences, master students, doctors, medical students, and other interested.

KLH3004 is the compulsory for ”MSc i Klinisk helsevitenskap” and “MSc in Excercise physiology and sport sciences”

Language

The lectures will be in Norwegian and English, se lecture plan below. The textbook and the exercises are in English. Compulsory group work with 3 compulsory exercises are a major part of the course. Some of these groups will use English.

Contents

The contents of KLH3004 and KLMED8004 are identical

KLMED8004 Part I (autumn) gives 7.5 credits (studiepoeng) and includes descriptive statistics, probability, and basic statistical analysis. KLMED8005 Part II (spring) gives 7.5 credits (studiepoeng) and includes mainly analysis of contingency tables, regression analyses (linear, logistic, and survival).

Prerequisites (Forkunnskaper)

Mathematics from ”videregående skole”: algebra, elementary functions, the exponential function and logarithms.

Enrolment (Påmelding)

Via StudentWeb. Do this before study start. Make sure you enrol for a group for the compulsory group work. This will be done at the first lecture.
For students not registrered at NTNU: (For studenter uten studierett ved NTNU, vennligst fyll ut oppmeldingsskjemaet som dere finner her under påmelding/eksamensmelding: http://www.ntnu.no/dmf/forskning/phd/emner)

Textbook

Bernhard Rosner (2006). Fundamentals of Biostatistics. 6th ed. ISBN:0-534-41820-1.

Supplementary literature with a less technical introduction to basic statistics:

In Norwegian: Odd Aalen m.fl.: Statistiske metoder i medisin og helsefag. Gyldendal 2006
Denne inneholder bl.a. en meget god innføring i sannsynlighetsregning.
In English: David Bowers: Medical statistics from scratch. 2nd edition. Wiley 2008.
A well written and easy to read introduction to data analysis.

Software

Some exercises require use of software. Some examples in the lectures will be shown using software. SPSS is the most used statistical software in medical research in Norway. Alternatives are Stata, MiniTab, or R. An introduction to Stata, SPSS and R will be given in the start of the course. It is sufficient to have basic knowledge of one of these softwares, for example SPSS.

Literature on software:

Stata: Rabe-Hesketh, S. and B. S. Everitt (2007). A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using Stata. Chapman & Hall/CRC.

SPSS: Kinnear & Gray (2008). SPSS 15 Made Simple. Psychology Press.

SPSS Manuals: “SPSS Base User’s Guide” is a good introduction to SPSS available on NTNU, DMF: P:\programvare\SPSS16\Manualer

R:  An Introduction to R (pdf, free) or Everitt, B. S. and T. Hothorn (2006). A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using R. Boca Raton, Chapman & Hall/CRC.

Exercises

There are 3 compulsary exercises. Each exercise includes 8 parts. The group hands in its solution to the group teacher (gruppeveileder) shortly after the group teaching (veiledning)

Exercise 1

Exercise 2

Exercise 3

Lists of group participants are here

Time and place for group teaching is found here.

Group teaching (2 hours) is arranged prior to each handing in of exercises. The group shall have finished the exercise as much as possible before the group teaching. Attendance is compulsory, and attendance lists will be circulated. The group teacher corrects and approves the exercise for each group. Each participant must keep a file with paper copies of the approved exercises. The exercises and group teaching are the main part of the course evaluation.

Final exam

There will be a final written exam with duration 4 hours on 16 December. The exam may be answered in English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish. All printed and written aids, and calculator are allowed, according to “examination support code A”, see http://www.ntnu.no/studies/examinations/instructions (in Norwegian “Hjelpemiddelkode A” se http://www.ntnu.no/studier/eksamen/instruks).

Lecture plan

In addition, time plan for group teaching (øvingsveiledning) is here

Some lectuers are taught two times. For example, “Probability” (Sannsynlighet”), Chaper 3 in the textbook, is taught 26/8 at 1415-1600 (in a Block Week for Master i Klinisk helsevitenskap) and 2 september (primarily aimed at KLMED8004). The contents of the two lectures are identical, but we aim at teaching in English those at 1215-1400 (for KLMED8004).
